New Animation: Crooked Rot

Posted by Doki Jul. 27, 2008 @ 9:17 AM EDT

A return to the stop-motion here with Crooked (Orcus) Rot. This started off as an experiment to see if stop-frame would be any better using an SLR camera. The result would certainly suggest so visually, but it was a hell of a lot harder. This project really began when I discovered a treasure cave of strange items in my own back yard including mannequin heads and rubber hands. It inspired me so much that every time I returned I gathered more inspiration. Originally I focused on capturing light which is why the SLR was so important, but eventually it almost became a sequel to Hell with all the blood flying about . Composer Marcus Fjellström who donated some of his music for Men From Up The Stairs became interested in the project when I posted a few screen shots on Newgrounds and went on to compose the entire musical score. This is interesting because it's the first time that I have made the video first and then sent it to someone else to do the music. He did an amazing job.

Have a look

Dude.

That was creepier than usual. Noice job.

Jul. 27, 2008 | 9:48 AM Pyto1 says:

Have you considered horror films? Also I have to ask, did you use sparklers? I wish my camera could take pictures that fast.

Jul. 27, 2008 | 9:49 AM Wiiporter says:

I thought it was quite good. Very surreal

Jul. 27, 2008 | 9:53 AM Iamjohn says:

That was really good, creepy too.

You should upload it to NG. :3

Jul. 27, 2008 | 10:07 AM SaltshakerClock says:

That scared me.

And I don't mean like, "that was so weird" kind of scary.

I mean I was afraid, and I wanted to click out, but I just kept watching.

Jul. 27, 2008 | 10:19 AM mayoarm11 says:

you should submit it to NG even though it's not fllash.

It was cool.

Jul. 27, 2008 | 2:39 PM Doki responds:

I'm working on it.

Jul. 27, 2008 | 10:23 AM Wiiporter says:

What exactly did you use as a light source?

Jul. 27, 2008 | 11:06 AM Gi-go says:

Pretty cool.

I wonder what a burglar would think, breaking into your house to find a bunch of sown up manikin heads and sawed off hands.

I would leave.

Ray Bradbury here
First may I congratulate you on your confidence for self promotion. It is something some artists fear. I deeply enjoyed your animation and all of its surreal wonders and untraditional narrative.
Keep making cartoons for yourself and keep going. Lots of love Ray.

THAT WAS AWSOME!

Jul. 27, 2008 | 1:26 PM OWRBtheo says:

It's your best stop-motion yet, beautiful to look at, yet quite disturbing...
I can't help but notice the tubes going into the head again, that happened in one of your cartoons too...
Perhaps a recurring theme that I've spotted? Like David Lynch and his recurring theme of stages in his films...

Jul. 27, 2008 | 1:36 PM slipz10 says:

And who exactly would enjoy that?

how did you pull over some of the really high contrast images without editing them? lens filters?

Jul. 28, 2008 | 10:29 AM Doki responds:

I used different levels of exposure on the camera and also some other techniques that I don't want to give away.

Beautiful work! Marcus' music is the perfect compliment to your imagery. Are you going to stick with the stop motion technique now? It really suits the eeriness of your work, gives it a harder more realistic edge.

It's Way Past Your Bedtime is great, I've listened to it a lot in the last few days since I downloaded it.

Sep. 21, 2008 | 1:37 PM Sami-Hikari says:

I was thoroughly impressed. All of it was just so ethereal and imaginative. You've got a knack for originality; probably one of the reasons why I've loved your stuff since I started watching it back in '05. A few of the scenes reminded me of the mannequin/bicycle scene from the Saw horror films - which is in no way a bad thing. Then I looked at other parts and thought quite seriously that you could be something like the next Tim Burton. If that doesn't indicate the awesome amount of talent you have, then nothing else does.

Still, it was all very eerie and yes, as Wiiporter said below, it was incredibly surreal. It's currently three am, which is in my opinion the creepiest hour to be awake at, but it didn't scare me at all; mostly because I'm insensitive to such things by now. It actually really entertained me. I was sitting there going "Wow, this is completely amazing." and not really giving a damn about time, place or the fact that I have to 'wake up' in another three hours.

Brilliant, and I can't believe that you found most of this crap just in your backyard - although to be fair I do have a mannequin head hanging around in my bedroom somewhere, but none quite as, er, twisted, as those. I'd have to say that I have respect for a lot of flash artists on NG, but out of all of them, you are my favourite; regardless of whether it's posted under this account or the Jerry Jackson account. Everything is amazing, and this is just like the icing on the cake, I swear.

Never, ever stop posting on Newgrounds, and never give up making flashes or little projects like this video. The world would be a much more depressing place (or much less depressing, if you count the mind-fuck known as Salad Fingers, but come on, everyone loves Salad Fingers no matter how much it takes away their childhood) without your work.

<3 Much love for your creativity, always and forever, because you deserve all the praise in the world for it. (Hell knows we don't have enough unique-minded people like you. We need more, damn it!)

Wow... and I thought you were only good at hand-drawn stuff! This is awesome!
I've been watching your vids for a long time now, Mr. Firth, and I adore them! I have to say, when I first started watching your series "Salad Fingers", I wasn't a huge fan of the weird stuff. Creeped me out too much, you know? But then I got hooked onto your series! And this little gem, "Crooked (Orcus) Rot", is such a sick, twisted little treat! It kinda has a little bit of a Tim Burton feel to it, although much more gory. I hope you're not offended by that. Thank you, and keep up the good work!

Oct. 7, 2008 | 12:26 AM nietzlawe says:

I noticed this a small while ago, but decided to let the video soak in a little before making a comment.

I love stop-motion animation and think its very underrated. Some people used to laugh at the B movies, but I thought seeing King Kong and dinosaurs etc moving this way, had a kind of creepy overtone to it. I also think clay is underrated as well, there is a good clay horror animation called Chainsaw Maid on Youtube, which you should check out.

The mixture of surreal and I guess half normal objects made the overall piece much more spookier. A young Cronenberg in the making you are, the world is your oyster producing shit like this at such a young age.

I've seen a few other videos that combine different techniques in this way. I can't remember exactly, but I think it might have been a bonus extra on an Hellraiser DVD, the surreal horror and bizarre imagery was absolutely mind blowing, wish I could find it.

I would love to see you do something like this again, but using something like Greek mythology with monsters like Cerberus, Medusa etc and combining it with occultism and black magic, hynotism or bizarre imagery along those tramlines.

Keep up the excellent work man.
Nietzlawe
